Ecodesign and Energy labelling from 1st July 2016

Within the EU a new energy labelling scheme for professional refrigerators and freezers has come into force from the 1st July 2016. It is based on the new EU Ecodesign Directive which states that all products sold within the EU marketplace must legally pass stringent Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS). All products must achieve at least a ‘G’ energy rating. If they do not meet this new threshold they cannot be sold in the market (within EU). In practice this means that by law all products which consume energy above the minimum level will not allowed be sold within the EU from 1 July 2016.

The new requirements of Ecodesign, which have been developed to drive energy efficiency and environmentally friendly design, applies to all manufacturers and importers who sell and market products within the EU.

The labelling scheme is mandatory for countries within EU, and is based on a letter-based rating from A to G, where A denotes the most energy saving products. To further improve energy efficiency the energy thresholds will be tightened again in 2019. This means that class A+++ will be introduced by 1 July 2019.
